Do not be controlled by numbers

It’s funny how numbers can control people. The normal thing is that people were controlled by the money. In the end, everything we do and how we manage our life is with the target of keep the number in the bank as high as possible.

But in recent years, new numbers have emerged capable of controlling people’s lives, especially the youngest. I am referring to the numbers of social media: likes, followers, subscribers … In some cases it may be related to the bank numbers but that is not the type of control they normally have over people.

It is true that there are people who have discovered in social media a way to generate income and earn a living, but they are the least. What I want to refer to is that of millions of people who base their lives on the likes of their publications on social media.

It is logical that the number that reflects the money we have in our bank account conditions our lives. In the end we live in a world dominated by money and we must find a way to generate it in order to live. But I have always said that we must also be able to manage this. It does not make sense to let ourselves be dominated by that number, and to spend our lives sitting in a workplace obsessed with making that number grow and then spending it on things that do not bring us real happiness.

I really think it makes no sense to spend your days working without being able to spend time with your friends and family and then spend the money buying a super house that you will not even be able to enjoy. Of course, with the photos of your house you will have many likes on Instagram …

The same can happen to us with social media and likes or followers. In the same way that we can lose our lives obsessed with growing our bank account, there are people who lose their lives by growing their likes and their followers. People are more concerned with taking a video or a good photo than with enjoying the moment.

It is something that seems sad to me, not being aware of the magic of the moment to get likes from people you don’t even know. But it can be even worse. The problem comes when that photo that you have taken and that has not allowed you to live in the moment does not have the likes you expected. For many people it becomes a real problem, even generating anxiety and discomfort.

The obsession that the number of likes is high is capable of not only controlling your time and your actions but also controlling your mood.

And reflecting on this, I have come to the conclusion that just like money, the number of likes or followers is a way in which people believe that it serves to impress others. As a sign of success. Like something that positions you in society. That is, if we already had enough to spend money on things that we do not need to impress people we do not know, now we must also dedicate our time to grow our social media to continue impressing more people who we do not know either.

We all like that when we do a good job we are rewarded and recognized. And if we make a good publication on social media we like it to be recognized, but the important thing is not to be controlled by numbers.

Es curioso como los números pueden llegar a controlar a las personas. Lo normal es que la gente estuviésemos controlados por el dinero. Al final, todo lo que hacemos y cómo gestionamos nuestra vida es para que ese número en el banco sea lo más alto posible.

Pero en estos últimos años han surgido nuevos números capaces de controlar la vida de la gente, especialmente de los más jóvenes. Estoy refiriéndome a los números de las redes sociales: likes, seguidores, suscriptores… En algunos casos puede estar relacionado con los números del banco pero no es ese el tipo de control que normalmente tienen sobre la gente.

Es cierto que hay gente que ha descubierto en las redes sociales una forma de generar ingresos y ganarse la vida, pero son los menos. A lo que me quiero referir es a la de millones de personas que basan su vida en función de los likes que tienen sus publicaciones en redes sociales.

Es lógico que el número que refleja el dinero que tenemos en nuestra cuenta del banco nos condicione la vida. Al final vivimos en un mundo dominado por el dinero y que debemos encontrar una forma de generarlo para poder vivir. Pero siempre he dicho que esto también debemos ser capaces de gestionarlo. No tiene sentido dejarnos dominar por ese número, y que se nos pase la vida sentados en un puesto de trabajo obsesionados con hacer crecer ese número para después gastarlo en cosas que no nos aportan real felicidad.

De verdad pienso que no tiene sentido pasarse los días trabajando sin poder pasar tiempo con tus amigos y familia para después gastarte el dinero comprarte una super casa que ni vas a poder disfrutar. Eso si, con las fotos de tu casa vas tener muchos likes en Instagram…

Esto mismo nos puede ocurrir con las redes sociales y los likes o seguidores. De la misma manera que podemos perder la vida obsesionados con hacer crecer nuestra cuenta bancaria, hay gente que pierde su vida haciendo crecer sus likes y sus seguidores. La gente está más preocupada por hacer un video o una buena foto que de disfrutar el momento.

Es algo que me parece triste, no ser conscientes de la magia del momento por conseguir unos likes de gente que ni conoces. Pero todavía puede ser peor. El problema llega cuando esa foto que has hecho y que no te ha permitido vivir el momento no tiene los likes que esperabas. Para mucha gente se convierte en un autentico problema, generando incluso ansiedad y malestar.

La obsesión por que el número de likes se muestre alto es capaz de no solo controlar tu tiempo y tus acciones sino que también controla tu estado de ánimo.

Y reflexionando sobre esto, he llegado a la conclusión de que igual que ocurre con el dinero, el número de likes o seguidores es una forma en que la gente cree que sirve para impresionar a los demás. Como un signo de éxito. Cómo algo que te posiciona en la sociedad. Es decir, que si ya teníamos bastante con gastar el dinero en cosas que no necesitamos para impresionar a gente que no conocemos, ahora también debemos dedicar nuestro tiempo para conseguir hacer crecer nuestras redes sociales para seguir impresionando a más gente que tampoco conocemos.

A todos nos gusta que cuando hacemos un buen trabajo se nos recompense, y se nos reconozca. Y si hacemos una buena publicación en redes sociales nos gusta que sea reconocida, pero lo importante es no estar controlado por números.
